Bio for Media Use:

Short Version: Dawn Combs, MA, CH is an ethnobotanist, functional foods expert, and the author of the books Conceiving Healthy Babies, Heal Local and Sweet Remedies. A respected educator and speaker, her work has appeared in both national and local media outlets including print, tv and radio. She is a longtime voice in the real foods movement and is known for her expertise in honey-based medicine and systems-level wellness. Dawn shares her passion to connect food, herbs and lifestyle for vibrant personal, family and community health online as The Family Health Steward. She lives and works with her family on a homestead near Columbus, Ohio where food and medicine mingle in the rows and serve as both the family’s source of care and a living classroom for her work.

Long Version: Dawn Combs, M.A., CH, is an Ethnobotanist and functional foods expert. She is the founder of the internationally renowned Soda Farm, a disruptor in the soda market and longstanding, beloved brand in the real foods movement. Dawn lives near Columbus, Ohio with her husband, two kids and an ever-changing menagerie of farm animals. Their homestead is their source of food and healthcare, and a learning lab for her work and her community- modeling how to reconnect food and medicine from the ground up.

She offers her personal writings and education online as "The Family Health Steward”. As a professional speaker, and educator, Dawn is highly respected for her engaging, empowering and down-to-earth style. Her work has appeared in Homestead Living, Heirloom Gardener, Mother Earth Living, Hobby Farms, Martha Stewart Living, and many other print outlets as well as tv and radio. She is best known for her expertise in using honey and as a medium for medicine-making and for reconnecting people with their innate wisdom to be well while strengthening local food/medicine economies.

Dawn's first book, Conceiving Healthy Babies (New Society, 2014), details her own victory over infertility and calls for a shift in our conversations about family health in the United States. Next came Heal Local (New Society, 2015), moving from starting a family to building a natural medicine cabinet that invests in household health while growing a stable local medicine economy. Her latest book, Sweet Remedies (Storey, 2019) dives deeply into where her work as a sustainable beekeeper and a plant scientist converge... giving us an understanding of how to use the combination of plants and honey, changing our view on how natural remedies should taste and opening our eyes to the endless possibilities of truly using your food as your medicine.
